The Misconception New Artists Have About The Music Industry

Andile wants me to share my views as an artist working in the radio space. His question is:
Being that you’re an artist and are working in a producer role in the broadcasting industry, and having the view from both sides; what is the misconception or mistake many artists make when it comes to getting either their music or themselves interviewed on radio platforms?
The misconception that new artists have about the music industry is that they think when they wake up one morning and decide to be an artist, and they tell themselves, “I’m an artist;” they think everyone is going to roll out the red carpet for them. They believe things will be done for them because they’re saying they’re an artist.
But it’s actually hard work. When I entered the game, I’d release a song and be mad that no one was paying attention. I didn’t realise that there was an infrastructure in place. There are bloggers to contact. There are media outlets to contact. There was a network that I needed to build that would appreciate the work that I put out.
If I’m unknown and getting to release, all these media outlets don’t know who I am. All these radio stations don’t know who I am. All these bloggers don’t know who I am. Why should they care to release my music? Especially when there were other acts like AKA, Casper, Kendrick Lamar or any other artist. These artists are affiliated with major record labels and entities that have networks and relationships with all these people.
So, in the grand scheme of things, who are you?
