Hey Family, welcome back to ShabZi Madallion School!
First, what you need to know about platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music, is that a single stream pays $0.005. If you do the calculation, you’ll realise it’s not much and my advice on monetising from streams is that I wouldn’t make music to earn a living from streaming platforms.
However, making sure that you have all you need to release your music on these platforms for you to make some money when all the numbers add up is imperative. If you didn’t watch my previous video about what you need to do to release your music on DSPs (Digital Streaming Platforms), then please go back and watch or read that content. I wouldn’t lean on that being your main source of income.
Second, when you are an independent artist, it’s very important to diversify your income stream. There are many other things that you can and should be doing as an artist to make money. Sign up with a publisher and they’ll help you figure out how to put your music in places such as getting sync deals. They could negotiate on your behalf to get one of your songs in an advert for a very popular brand for example.
Third, make sure that you’re doing live performances.
Fourth, make sure that your music is registered with the relevant performing societies in South Africa, be it SAMRO (South African Music Rights Organisation) or CAPASSO. Do your research on these societies and make sure that you are in their system if you’re a professional releasing artist.
Don’t just be an independent artist. Put yourself in situations where what you are doing you enjoy, and you have skills to do that work and those skills pay you. It’s not enough to just be an artist; an independent artist, especially these days. Most of the artists who are getting paid big numbers are artists with big followings, that are associated with major labels and are working with conglomerates to put them in positions where they are making a decent enough income every month.
But that model of how money is made for and by artists is a similar model independent artists can adopt if they treat themselves like the entrepreneurs that they are, like the entrepreneurs that you are.
