Firstly, I’m assuming you've mixed the music, the music is ready to be released, you have all the masters and you're ready to drop.
To take your music to the digital world, and upload your music independently, we have TuneCore, Distrokid and other platforms. These days in South Africa you will have noticed that agencies are erecting to distribute on your behalf. You have Africori, Paradise WorldWide and more. You must research the platforms and see which ones speak to you. Select whichever feels easy to you as an artist. That’s the first thing you’re going to do.
The second thing you will do is make sure you have the metadata for the music you’re about to release. So, what’s metadata? It’s the details regarding the song: the name of the song, who is featured on the song, what is the song about etc.
Once the songs are done, you need to put on your marketing hat and know exactly how you want to put your song out there. Remember, you’re a storyteller and as an artist, you must know how to tell your story artistically and as a marketer. You need cover art for the music you’re about to release; it might be an EP, a single or a song. Whatever it may be, you need to have all these things put together to get ready to release to the digital streaming platforms.
The marketing needs to be right, the story behind the music, the cover art, and the music needs to be ready. From that point on, you should be able to upload your music if you’re going to be doing it on TuneCore or Distrokid. These are aggregators where you can do this process yourself. But with agencies like Africori and Paradise Worldwide and other agencies that you find, you’ll be working with the agency.
It helps to be an independent artist who is already putting in work to work with these agencies, otherwise, I think it’s a waste of time. These agencies tend to work with artists that are kind of bubbling under and have some kind of a following because the work that you do with them in terms of distributing the music will become easier because they can pitch you to playlists. Part of that pitching is when they use your bio, the details you’ve got and the music that you’re about to release. They put all this forth to all digital streaming platforms.
In answer to this question, you will have had a million other questions and think “You missed this, it could have been that, it could have been this”, and this is where you book a session with me. We can see where you’re at as an artist and I can assist YOU specifically with YOUR specific questions on how to get to the next stage of your journey of releasing music.
Please share this information with artists that you know, if you’re not an artist yourself, that you believe need to be following this kind of content for them to reach their next level. You might be helping them out.
Make sure you’re subscribed to our newsletter for new content because I’m going to continue to answer some of your frequently asked questions. The answers will also be available here in the blog space.
REMEMBER: I’m hosting FREE GROUP CONSULTATIONS every Wednesday from 17H30-18H30. Make sure you book your spot. It’s only 5 people per session where you get to ask me anything about being an independent artist. Make sure the question is relevant to YOU and YOUR journey.
If there are no spots available, check the calendar for the next available sessions. If you still don’t get a spot, then you’ll be placed on a waiting list and will be notified when a spot opens.
