How Do I Submit To A Record Label?

STEP 1: You must research the labels aligning with your genre. So, if you make hip-hop or R&B music, you might want to research all the labels that speak to the genre that you produce.

We live in a time now where many labels sign artists of many genres and you might find yourself with a label that speaks to many genres. Still, you need to be careful to align yourself with a label that has succeeded in that genre and specializes in it, even if they work with other genres.

STEP 2: You need to follow the submission guidelines that they portray on their websites. These days you can submit straight from a website. Go to their website under the contacts tab. They might have a submission link. See what specifications record labels look for in submissions they need from an artist who wants to send a demo to their record label.

If everyone has access to submit to a record label, how do you ensure you stand out? Here are some tips and guidelines for getting noticed.

STEP 3: Prepare a compelling demo showcasing your work. Your work is the most important ingredient in the submission process but don’t sleep on other ingredients that might help compliment the most important ingredient, which is the music.

Make sure you stand out as an artist and individual on all social media platforms to get noticed by record labels. Most artists won’t be strong on all social media platforms, they might shine on one or two. Whatever the case may be, put your best foot forward. Highlight the profile with the largest following, or display all if the following is similar on all platforms. Check out the blog: Making The Most Of Your Social Media Presence

If you have an active presence on social media platforms as an artist, even with a small following, it is still important because labels are interested in signing talent. You may not have a large following, but your work ethic can showcase your talent on these platforms regardless.

Following doesn’t mean you make great music but also remember that having no following doesn’t mean that you’re an artist who works hard. You want to find a nice balance between being a great talent and someone who has a good work ethic. Check out a previous blog: How do I manage perceptions in the music industry, for some guidance.

Put your best foot forward. For your demo, I suggest you submit three songs. If you’re genre specific, then let’s say you make hip-hop music, within the hip hop genre how many types of styles can you visit in those three songs to show that you are an artist who knows how to diversify their talent?

The submission process relies heavily on the quality of your music as well as your ability to effectively present your brand on social media, regardless of whether you have a following. Standing out doesn’t always have to be about people noticing you, it’s about you noticing the different aspects you have to offer as a talent, a brand, and an individual. Those are the three most important things I would highlight when it comes to submitting to a record label.
