1. You must share engaging content regularly.
You need to share all the things that you believe in, that you’re about, that speak to your music. It’s not enough to share the cover art of your song on all social media platforms and expect that to attract more likes to your page.
Create innovative videos, images, and posts that can help you drive the message of the same song, EP, or album that you’re releasing. You can use this principle repeatedly. You can do the whole dropping cover art, the song is out, link in bio etc. but other things must follow that marketing.
Maybe do a video speaking on the song. What inspired the song? Why do you think people need to be listening to the song? This could be you talking in front of the camera. Pick up your phone and speak about your music and make sure you lead people to a link where they can get your music.
Maybe speaking about the music is not enough. What else can you do? Read the lyrics out loud, acapella. Do a rendition of the music that differs from how purposefully packaged it is to be consumed. That’s okay. If you have an acapella version, someone could fall in love with the lyrics. Someone could fall in love with the way you’re speaking on the song, EP, or album you made.
There are different ways of doing this. Maybe re-enact certain songs. If you're telling a story, get your friends or the people around you willing to do something with you to give the music that you’re releasing life. Have fun with it, don’t take yourself too seriously. What you are taking seriously is the marketing so that’s enough. But as you’re doing the work, have fun with it. Make sure that people can feel your energy as you’re presenting yourself.
Also, there are no rules to marketing. The only rule that I would give you is always be yourself. Always believe in what you are doing. This helps with communicating what you’re about and the music you just released to the audience that resonates with your personality. There are different ways but always share content. Do as much as you can and whatever idea you come up with, if you’re going to ask somebody if it’s a good idea, don’t ask them, JUST DO IT because it is a good idea.
2. Collaborate with other artists.
Cross-promote. A lot of upcoming artists have this thing of wanting to collaborate with someone bigger than them. Cool, that’s a nice dream but work with the people that are around you, the people that are within reach. Because chances are, they are trying to get an audience as well.
You might not want to match what you’re doing with somebody who’s doing something you don’t believe in. Cool don’t come up with excuses, just shift your direction and vision towards the people who are making the kind of music that you enjoy, or you think relates to the music you’re making, or you think their personality speaks to whatever you want your audience to know about you and whom you’re aligned with.
Work with as many people as you can who are around you; it doesn’t always have to be artists. You could be working with an influencer trying to build up their platform so ask them, as an influencer what they are doing. Figure out how to collaborate. They can push your song and you can advertise something of theirs that they’re working on. These days with Instagram, you can post a collaboration post where it’s one post but it’s coming from both pages. This way you’re reaching a bigger audience instead of just your audience.
