Free Group Consultation Sessions 3: Q&A

The purpose of these free group consultation sessions is to aid aspiring independent musicians and aspiring broadcasters in achieving their professional goals. You’re invited to ask questions and hopefully use the answers to propel you forward. Here are the questions that came up from our third group consultation.

THE IMPORTANCE OF ROLLOUTS

Sfundo asked, how important are rollouts currently and what can you do with the minimum budget without giving away too much?

Sfundo manages some music artists and enjoys the production, marketing, promotion and rollout process. He likes having the fans or supporters engaged from the beginning until the project's release. However, at this stage, his artists don’t have a lot of followers on social media.

ShabZi responded by recounting how he built on his fanbase after The Hustle.

HOW TO HUSTLE YOUR WAY INTO THE MAINSTREAM

Prosper is an aspiring radio producer and artist. He has concluded his studies but doesn’t know his next steps. He does community projects but he’s struggling to break into the mainstream.

ShabZi responded with another story of the steps he took to break into the radio space.

HOW LONG SHOULD A DEMO BE AND WHAT SHOULD BE IN IT?

Prosper wants to know how long a demo should be and what skills he should showcase. Intro, backlink, live read, close a show etc.

ShabZi explains the requirements when submitting a demo to the South African Radio Awards and suggests Prosper use a similar model while giving tips on content he could use.

HOW TO COLLABORATE WITH OTHER ARTISTS

Vieno asked, how can we as music artists create a structure where we work together to reach our audience using our skills and resources and allow everyone the freedom to grow individually once we’ve met our goals?

ShabZi responds by giving his views on collaborations and how to go about selecting who to approach for collaboration.

HOW TO APPROACH SOMEONE FOR A COLLABORATION?

Vieno wants advice on how to approach someone for a collaboration. Should he be natural, business-like, a sales pitch?

ShabZi believes it depends on who he is approaching. Is the person your peer? Is it T-Bo Touch?

ARE YOU MAKING A LIVING FROM MUSIC?

Are you making a living from music and how long did it take you to get to where you are?

ShabZi describes all the different hats he’s had to wear to get to where he is now.

HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN A POSITIVE ATTITUDE?

Viena asked how you kept your attitude and mindset in the right place when things weren’t going well.

ShabZi talks about how he stays motivated.
