The purpose of these free group consultation sessions is to aid aspiring independent musicians and aspiring broadcasters in achieving their professional goals. You’re invited to ask questions and hopefully use the answers to propel you forward. Here are the questions that came up from our second group consultation.
THE MISCONCEPTION NEW ARTISTS HAVE ABOUT THE MUSIC INDUSTRY
Andile wants me to share my views as an artist working in the radio space. His question is:
Being that you’re an artist and are working in a producer role in the broadcasting industry, and having the view from both sides; what is the misconception or mistake many artists make when it comes to getting either their music or themselves interviewed on radio platforms?
HOW TO DIFFERENTIATE YOURSELF FROM YOUR COMPETITORS
Glen recognises that there is a lot of competition in the music space with “everyone” dropping a single daily. He wants to know how he can differentiate himself from his competitors. He can see that others move as brands and not artists, so how do you begin forming a brand identity for an artist?
HOW I GOT THE NETFLIX SYNC DEAL
Glen has realised how artists behave and present themselves even during social occasions can deter big brands from working with them. I responded by recounting how I got the Netflix deal.
HOW TO GIVE EVERYTHING ITS FAIR TIME, EFFORT, AND ENERGY
Andile wanted to know how I wear all the different hats as an artist creating music for film, for myself, being a producer at 5fm, and a producer for a soccer show etc. How do I give everything its fair time, effort and energy?
He feels you won't see the results you envision if you don’t invest in those three things. Also, what are the frustrations of trying to juggle all the different roles?
WHAT IS THE PRIORITY AS AN ARTIST BUILDING A BRAND?
Glen was told that music is a long-term game. On the side, you’ll need to find something that generates money so you’re able to invest in your craft. When you find something that generates money, which aspects do you focus on the most? Is it PR, branding, or the sonics of the music? Which one do you level up?
WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME TO DROP YOUR MUSIC?
Glen has some music that’s almost ready for release. He wants to come up with a marketing plan to release it. When is go time?
